St Petersburg Academy of Arts is even older than the United States - it was established nineteen years earlier. The Academy, under the original name the Academy of Three Noblest Arts, was founded by Count Ivan Shuvalov. At the time of its opening everyone was allowed to attend classes, including peasants, if they were gifted.. It was until 1764 that all classes were held at the palace of Count Ivan Shuvalov on Sadovaya Street. After that the name of the establishment was changed to Imperial Academy of Arts by order of Catherine the Great, who also commissioned a new building, which construction took 25 years. The two magnificent buildings - the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Winter Palace face each other, separated by the famous Neva River. This art academy, called in many ways and of neoclassic architecture style, today even keeps 3,000-year-old sphinxes and griffins imported from Egypt.
When the academy was founded, it sent its most famous painters to other countires such as France and Italy to get acquainted with various artistic styles. Nowadays people from all over the world travel to the academy to study the unique and elaborate pieces and techniques of Russian art, created there. In addition to the three noble arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture, the Academy now offers classes in glass making, stone carving, weaving, mosaics, and making matryoshkas, the famous Russian nesting dolls.
ArtTours was founded in 2002 by a few St Petersburg artists and Russian Translation workers who found out that the visitors of the city would like to see not only the classical masterpieces of the Russian art, exhibited in the Hermitage and the Russian Art Museum, but also some examples of the contemporary art and culture of Russia. The company offers its customers a variety of what it calls “master classes” - in painting, iconography, sculpture, stained glass, jewelry, art restoration, Russian theater and ballet, as well as several two-hour workshop options, including the popular Russian painting of Eastern eggs.

A samba school rather has the social function to organize and coordinate huge parties and festivals, than to educate. In Rio alone, over 50 samba schools are committed to the preparation of Mardi Gras or Carnival throughout the year. In fact, the participation in the 65-to 80-minute performance that involves up to 5,000 people costs between $500,000 and $1,000,000, spent on costumes, floats and rehearsals. It is true that there are a few samba schools in Rio that do not let foreigners participate on behalf of the school, because, in their opinion, foreigners who don’t know enough Portuguese to learn the songs may ruin their whole year’s efforts, and may diminish the schools’ chances of staying in the top 14 that are allowed to perform in the big two-day parade—other samba schools gladly accept Portuguese Translator Services worker’s money to involve a foreigner in participating in everything from costume assembling to drumming to shaking rumps in the parade. According to one recent vacationer, “The schools spread the foreign travelers around the fringes so they are nearly invisible to the judges.” If you can afford it you can choose from a wide variety of wonderful costumes, magnificently ornate with feathers, tassels and sequins.
