The ‘unmountable boot volume blue screen‘ is a pretty devastating experience particularly when it has appeared suddenly without any explainable reason. A computer might experience this problem after a piece of software has been updated or installed. If this is the case it’s highly likely that there is a fault with the registry key or device driver.

Rolling back the said device driver would be a good place to start, to try and fix the blue screen error. If this solves the issue, contact the manufacturer for an updated driver or visit their site. If you still get blue screen error codes, then take note of the error message and enter the error message into a search engine to see if you can find a fix.

Finding a solution from the mysterious stop error code alone, can be difficult if you’re not a tech-person. Even for an expert PC technician, an error code may not provide an instant answer and take a little trial and error before a solution is found. By far the most reoccurring reason for stop error codes, as well as sluggish PC performance, is a poorly kept registry.

Most old and even fairly new computer registries look a total mess. Remember the ‘Architect’ from The Matrix? Well, they should have called him the Registry. Important configuration settings are kept in your registry folder for the system setup, any hardware and software installed, and your system profile and preferences. The registry keeps a record of what files you’ve created, in addition to any important changes you’ve made to your computer, such as installation of hardware and applications.

Messy program reinstallations and removals can leave unused or duplicate registries, even if you use the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ function in control panel. When the registry folder becomes bloated with unneeded registries, it affects the functioning of your computer. You may experience a slower start up, time lag when using applications and general sluggishness.

Registry entries can become corrupted and damaged by spyware, viruses, Trojan horse, adware. If you’re using email or Internet browsing you should absolutely have some form of security application installed to help guard your computer from viruses. Ensure your running the latest update and that your antivirus application is working properly. In addition have firewall turned on, although this should be a default Windows setting.

Quite commonly a problem in the registry is the source for blue screen error messages. Furthermore your computer may be rendered unstable causing intermittent freezing and crashes. Because restart, is the only way to get out of a blue screen crash, data can be lost. In order to increase your computer’s performance and speed, the registry needs to be cleaned. Be aware that whatever changes that you do make will be permanent and there’s no going back once they’re made. So it’s best to make sure you create a back up first.

Making the wrong changes to the registry can cause irreversible damage to the OS. You may want to create backups of all your important files on your computer if you are going to attempt to edit the registry. But I wouldn’t recommend doing anything to your computer if you don’t feel comfortable or are unsure. It’s best to get someone who’s qualified or knows how to fix computers. An inexpensive alternative to fix your computer is to use a registry cleaning program.
