If you are interested in an online business here are two basic methods you can use to make money. Both of these can be implemented regardless of the product or service you are offering for sale. A successful web marketer can and should be operating with all types of business models on the internet. The first method is Pay Per Click. There is extreme profit potential with PPC but there is also more risk. The way this works is you sign up to Google and place ads with their Adwords program. You match the ads to different keywords that people would use to search on Google.

Your ads are shown when someone searches for a topic that matches the ad keyword. They are also shown in ad blocks on websites that have information relevant to your ad. So if your ad is for auto parts, your ad would be shown on sites with auto content or they would be shown when someone searches for auto parts.

The key is to carefully choose your keywords to match searches people make when they want to purchase something. If your site sells dog bowls you would want to show the ads when someone searches for ‘buy dog bowl’ or ‘get dog bowl’. These keywords indicate people are ready to purchase dog bowls. Likewise, you wouldn’t want the ad to show when people search for ‘dog bowl history’ or ‘how to use dog bowls’. You only want to show your ad to people who are in the purchasing mood. The people in the last two examples are looking for information, they are not looking to purchase dog bowls.

The positive side of this method is the ad viewers are probably interested in the topic of what you are selling since the ads match the web site they are visiting or searching for. The negative is you have to pay Google each time someone clicks on your ad. The cost is usually between a few cents up to several dollars per click. It is all a numbers game. If you get enough people buying your product to cover the cost of the ad campaign you make money. But if your product doesn’t sell, you end up paying a lot of money for clicks with nothing to show in return. A lot of people have made fortunes this way and others have lost their shirts when the ads they paid for didn’t convert into sales.

The second method is email marketing. This is not spamming. A spam campaign involves sending messages to people who didn’t ask for them. In legitimate email marketing your customers opt in to receive information from you through email. The current method is to offer something for free to your customers in exchange for the right to send them messages in the future.

Email marketing is driven by an Auto-responder. This is just a program in which you input the email addresses of your customers and then the auto-responder sends an email to everyone on your list of customers at a predetermined time. The key to making this method work is to offer a lot of good information in your newsletter so people stay enthused and open the messages when received. Then, every so often, offer something for sale like an ebook, a course, or another product. The great thing about this method is the relationship you build up with your newsletter list. Your customers gain knowledge from your newsletter and if the products you offer are of good value, which is the only kind you will produce, they are happy to pay you for the products. The relationship you build results in trust and people will only buy from those they trust.
