It doesn’t matter how big, new and fast your Disk on Key is, you always think that it is too small and too slow. Well, there is a solution to both these problems, and it is to change the removable Flash drive file system to NTFS. To make the Disk on Key compatible with most operating systems, most of them come with a FAT or FAT32 file system. If you change the removable Flash drive’s file system to NTFS, you will be able to use it only with Windows 2000 operating system and up. Why should you do this you ask? Well, according to PC World Tests: The reading and writing speed of NTFS file systems are 70% better than FAT32 and FAT, and you can also use NTFS built in compressing option to compress the files on your Disk on Key and get more space!

Here is how you do it:

  1. Connect the removable Flash Drive to the computer.

  2. Click start and then run.
  3. Type in “cmd” and wait for the black console window to open.

  4. Type in “convert e: /fs:ntfs” - replace e with you Disk on Key Drive letter.

That’s it. You now have an NTFS file system Disk on Key. Removable flash drive

If you want to compress it, do the following:

  1. From my computer right click the removable Flash drive and select properties

  2. Check the “Compress drive to save disk space” option at the bottom, and click OK and then OK again.

One warning though: to avoid damaging files, do not detach the removable Flash Drive without deactivating it first. That is because NTFS is much more delicate than other file systems.

Now you have a compressed NTFS files system based Disk on Key, truly a Super Disk on Key!

Enjoy.

Amit.
